Help with making lock picks (Bench Grinder)?

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Need a bench grinder for making lock picks!

I want to make lock picks out of hacksaw blades with a bench grinder.

I really don’t want to spend a lot of money on a bench grinder and would like to know if this one is alright or not. I am probably only going to be using it for making lock picks so it doesn’t need to be great.

The cheapest andok looking one I could find:

Has anyone tried polishing aluminum in a tumbler?

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

I have small 6061 aluminum parts. I currently use polishing compound with a buffing wheel on my bench grinder, but the extremely small size of the parts make it tough to hold onto them, and since I have several hundred to polish, it is very time consuming.

I borrowed a friend’s vibratory polisher (the kind used to polish brass ammunition casings) but that did not work at all. Even after 24 hours, I did not see any results. I thought maybe the media wasn’t rough enough, so I tried glass beads from my sand blaster, but that didn’t work either. (It did however shine up some copper pennies I threw in there as a test.) I finally tried play sand, but all that did was smooth off the rough edges, and give my parts an overall "matte" finish (the exact opposite of what I wanted.)

Has anyone used a tumbler to polish aluminum with good results? If so, what media did you use?

I was also thinking of a rock tumbler, but again, what media would work?

How to make aluminum powder at home?

I am looking for a fast and CHEAP way to make aluminum powder the fastest way possible (the finer the better!!!). I do not have a blender to ruin or a coffee grinder or a bench grinder!!! I need it ASAP so please help!!!

P.S I’ve heard of putting aluminum into a alkaline base drain cleaner but it has a VERY HIGH possibility of an explosion, so I don’t want to use it! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you modify/customize rimless eyeglass lenses?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

I have a pair of rimless glasses that I’d like to re-shape slightly. You can see photos of them, along with the proposed cuts, here:

http://www.troglodyne.com/glasses/glasses.html

Not sure an optical lab would do it. If they won’t:
- What kind of tool would I use? (Dremel? Bench grinder with a very fine wheel?)
- Would the reduction I have in mind affect the optics?
- Do tinted lenses have the particles mixed in with the plastic? (Wouldn’t want to chip any film.)

I don’t want to go to the hassle of trying to find different lenses when these are 75% there.
@Footprintz
I don’t understand how the holes are involved at all. Why can’t the lenses be unscrewed, the corners of the lenses be edged by hand, and then screwed back together? If you’re talking about some kind of jig where a template is used, that would seem to imply that accurate symmetry with both cuts can’t be obtained any other way. (I guess I’d have to see a picture of what you’re talking about.) When you say ruin the lenses, are you talking about the optics or shattering the lenses? Does the following video have anything to do with this:

Moving from US to Australia. Can I run my shop equipment?

Monday, June 7th, 2010

In a short period of time, I will be moving from the US to Australia. Since I do not expect to live there indefinitely, I would prefer to use some of my electrical items from here. Specifically,I have some woodworking tools (bandsaw, drill press, bench grinder ) that run on 120V. I know that our system is 120V and 60 Hz. The Australian system is 240 and 50 Hz. Can I purchase some converters/inverters that will allow me to safely use my tools while I am there?
